A rainy and foggy day reminded me of when I started this blog last year. My purpose last year was to take a photo per day which I found to be rather challenging! My new obstacle is to create a space on the web to link all of my work. I missed my blog, a place to post my thoughts and "just for fun" photos so I decided to start it again. Now I'll have my blog, facebook and website! Anyway, I couldn't say good-bye to all of those photos on here, they are a part of me now. I will attempt to post daily... I hope you will stop by.
I photographed this umbrella at the beginning of my blog last year om a rainy day, so here it is again.

the stories i could tell about how we completed this project! many days of shooting, wardrobe changes from the trunk of the car, organizing and driving all over town...
it was a fun to work so closely with three people; Meghan, Gabriel and Kerri, sharing a concept of what we wanted it to look like when it was all said and done.

fun in the studio...i was working on a photo that was to capture what "future tense" looks like to me and this is what my fellow photographer friend Megs and i came up with in the studio. we listened to spacey sounding music and just went with the flow. good thing she brought along tin foil...we found a sheet and some wire in the studio and voila!

i had the pleasure of shooting Amelia Curran for the release of her new album Hunter, Hunter. we went up to Atlantic Playland and had the whole park to ourselves for a short while because it was closed due to rain. i love the old merry-go-round and Amelia's new album has a lot to do with horses so it was perfect! i'll add some of the outtakes later. my personal favourites are the ones where she is actually riding the horse.

there is something about this photo that makes it my favourite of the day.

the bride gave me her coined "mean girl" pose. this equals awesome.

the guys on the train are photographing her as the drive by. such a wonderful candid moment!

they practiced this dip for weeks. it was their "kiss" move during the ceremony, so i had to get them to do it again!

such a genuine hug...you can feel their affection for each other.

she had an adorable vintage style dress, a cute pose was only natural...

now they're comfortable with me and the camera! love it.

the ferry was an important part of their courtship (is that a word anymore?) because one lived in halifax and the other in dartmouth. it was important to them to be on the ferry after their wedding and have those memories re-captured.

i went for a walk this evening to find a photo of the day. i know these are rather morbid but they have a lot of factors involved to test light. all i took was a flash, that i could trigger wirelessly, and 2 lenses. no tripod...no other lights. i had to find secure places for the camera to sit while it was on self-timer and figure out the frame and flash.i wanted to pick up late night ambient light as well so i was trying to figure out that as well. oh the science and math of photography...
the mood is mysterious, the angle i had to have was weird, so i figured the pose should also be strange.

very cool shadows from my plant stand on my fridge...i love the "grow a boyfriend" hanging by magnets on the fridge. i wish i had moved the tea kettle into the other spot of light on the stove. one of those moments where you see more that was there after the photo was taken and the moment/light was gone.

this was a random shot taken after the shoot with cailin. i have to say this is my favourite photo to date. the guys were into taking direction and the globe is so abstract but it works for me! on top of that, i love the light i was able to capture and create.

Cailin O'Neil is creating her own travel TV show so we took some headshoots on a rooftop downtown halifax. she heads to spain in a couple of weeks to shoot her pilot episode and will be at the big tomato fight! her website is http://www.travelyourself.ca/1/

there is nothing like buying fresh cherries, picked that morning, from a fruit stand along the side of a country road. we ate them as we drove and spit the pits out the window. is that wrong? fun and delicious. the french shore is a wonderful drive. we later stopped for an ice cream by the ocean. summertime delights.

when i'm visiting my dad in the valley we like to go for long drives and explore different parts of nova scotia. we have a favourite antique store past digby called grandma's that we always enjoy stopping at. on this day she had no special finds but i did sneak a bunch of photos in. i think the old guy that owns the store thought i was going to steal something because he followed me around the whole time i was there.

i stayed for a night at the beautiful Queen Anne B&B in Annapolis Royal because i was up teaching a day course in photography. the place was so beautiful and the bed so comfortable that i was afraid to fall asleep! the most deluxe featherbed in the world. in the morning they made me freah waffles with raspberries and whipped cream. i wanted to stay there forever but alas, i had to go to work. truly a lovely time.

my dad and i went for a drive for the day in the valley from Bridgetown to the French Shore. he told me of this old abandoned house along the way that he thought would make a great photograph. we hiked in through all of the overgrown grass, weeds and bugs to get some photos. i think he was right. this old house looks like the earth is going to take her.

i had the opportunity to photograph the lovely Christina Martin for the Coast. it was a quick headshot session but there were many that i liked! i hope to take photos with her again someday with more time to shoot. it was really a lot of fun. i love that my job gives me the opportunity to meet such interesting and creative people!

So my wonderfully talented friend Benny Fong took it into photoshop and made it happen! i think if i had tilted her head higher it would have worked even better but i wasn't taking the photo to emulate this image. i saw it in the shot after.

i had an assignment to shoot down at the waterfront today and it was amazing how many tourists were all over the place with their cameras and video recorders in the noonday sun . i could barely get in anywhere to take a shot so i decided to use them in my frame. if you can't beat em, shoot em!

i saw my friends vintage shoes and i had previously given her a glass of wine in a 1950's juice glass, it felt like a photo of the day.
it didn't seem quite right as shot, and i wanted to add more to the feeling of the image, so i gave it an antique quality.

tomorrow i'm back on track with the photo of the day, i promise! here's three as part of a series...

this evening i went for a walk to see what i could find with only artificial light available as my light source...
lots of nice green and red glowing lights (sarcasm). ha.
it was an interesting challenge though. i probably would have been able to do more if i lugged around my tripod but i just took the camera. it was a lot of fun.

this whole flower bush was lit by outdoor florescent lights.

i like these new lanterns my dad gave us for our backyard. i did the same shot at different times of day, not too far in between each other. i couldn't decide which one i liked best so i put both of them up. each has an unique feel to them!

we had a lovely gathering on the weekend to celebrate the home!
many of our wonderful friends came over to see what we had done, eat some good BBQ and sit around the fire to talk and catch up.

this was a busy day! i knew in the back of my mind i needed to get my shot of the day and i wasn't sure if i would have time, or if i knew what i wanted it to be.
we had friends visiting and i was getting a cup from the cupboard to get them a drink and i saw this light.
i liked the shadow and the rim light on the edge of the bowls.
i was, basically, just trying to capture the light.

i collect old photographs from antique stores, flea markets and garage sales. i do it because i feel like i am saving someones memories. i see the images lost and abandoned in a pile and they seem lonely. there are life stories in them that are a mystery to me and i imagine who they were. (i also like how they document the history of photography but that is an entirely different blog to write).
the two men laying on the grass in suits...were they brothers or friends? you can sense the time they lived in by their hats and clothing. i love the way they are casually leaning back, out in the woods somewhere, dressed up.
then there is the couple in the foreground laughing...at what or whom?
sometimes there are handwritten messages on the backs of them. those ones are real treasures. dates, places and names, sometimes a story.
i suppose i feel like i am saving them from being lost and forgotten. the reason i take photos most of the time is to capture memories, moments in time that may be forgotten. i record experiences in life to leave behind...like this, perhaps to be found like someone else like me.

i shot a lovely small wedding (only 17 people) and the bride was a delight to photograph.
i love the genuine happiness and laughter on her face. she is having the best day ever.

i stumbled upon this locked up and abandoned church outside of halifax. it looks to me to be taken care of by someone, wouldn't you say? it sits on a cliff right by the ocean and is really quite beautiful. i felt ghosts. religious ones.

my dad came down to help us renovate the new house. we painted, cleaned, decorated...it hasn't really stopped for days, hence the sporadic postings.

our move has been intense. a lot to lift and the house we moved into is dirty. no one cleaned it before they left...or for years i'd say. i haven't had the chance to get outside and search for photos so everything will probably be within what i can do while unpacking.
i haven't been online because we don't have internet until next week and i have been trying to get settled in! i think i am a day behind in photos. please bare with me!
so, this ugly wallpaper is being torn off the entry way walls. i had to share it's hideousness with you all. the landlady gave us the go ahead to make any renos we would like and the wallpaper is going to be the first to go.

i traveled to Amherst NB for this one on Saturday.
while waiting for the bride to return from getting her make-up and hair done, i had to find something to do with the groom and his men.
i noticed that they lived on a dead end street and took them all down there.

my dad came down to help us pack up the house a bit and we went out for hamburgers after. the westcliffe diner is down the street from the place i live in now (until tomorrow that is)! this place is run by an interesting couple who yell back and forth at each other as they make your food. you have to write your own order down on a post-it note and then they yell at you to come get your food when it's ready. there's no place like it. like stepping back in time...

I saw this car near my house as I was walking to a friends. This project has made me take my camera almost everywhere. Good thing. I love old vintage cars! The light was soft which made the chrome look beautiful and lucky for me I had my camera on my back.

the idea of another rain photo today didn't inspire me...

i have always like the idea of payphones and that we still have them is rather amazing. when do we ever see a person on a payphone anymore? and if we do we know their is something wrong with their cellphone, or they don't have one...they seem to be in trouble.
so i wanted to make it seem dramatic and mysterious.

i didn't get a lot of time to take a photo today because i was taking other photos! but after the shoot i saw this solitary figure in the distance, wandering alone in the park and i liked the feeling that it created.
old lamp posts, wet pavement and the light fading from the day...to further add to the feel of the image i gave it an old postcard quality.

i combined my rainy weekend into one triptych. (perhaps this is cheating a bit but there is an extra photo). i enjoy grouping images together to tell a story...this one is a warm, yet rainy, weekend in june. wet clover, an umbrella with it's reflection in a rain puddle and cheerful rubber boots.

Some old photos of my trip to Europe in 1995. The mind remembers things well but a photograph can bring you back to that exact moment. The far left photo is from Versailles and I remember the overwhelming feeling I had there of opulence and splendor. And,of course, there is something about the view from a Parisian hotel room that never leaves you. Ah yes "we'll always have Paris"!

Day 2
I'm in the process of moving and I forgot how much stuff one can acquire over the years. I've lived in the same yellow house with my sister for over 4 years and we have a big cavernous basement, so you can only imagine the boxes that stack up in the land of the forgotten. Among these boxes I found items that belonged to my stepmom who passed away from cancer when we first moved into this house. Unable to give her things away just yet, we placed them in the basement to deal with later.

Four years later I found her china plate set. I've unpacked them, washed them and packed them up again in a box labeled "kitchen".
It's heartwarming to have such a beautiful memory of her back.

At my new house I will sit on my back deck in the sunshine and drink tea with thoughts of her.
